7 Warning Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Clogged

By Marcus Rivera4 min read

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that clogged dryer vents cause approximately 2,900 house fires every year. Recognizing the warning signs early can protect your family and your home.

1. Clothes Take More Than One Cycle to Dry

This is the most common sign. When lint blocks the vent, hot moist air cannot escape, and your clothes stay damp. If loads that used to dry in 45 minutes now take 90 or more, your vent is likely restricted.

2. The Dryer Feels Extremely Hot

Touch the top of your dryer during a cycle. If it feels unusually hot, the system is not exhausting heat properly. This overheating strains components and increases fire risk.

3. Burning Smell During Operation

Lint is highly flammable. If you detect a burning odor while the dryer runs, stop the machine immediately and check the vent. This is a serious warning sign.

4. The Vent Hood Flap Does Not Open

Go outside and check the vent hood while the dryer is running. The flap should swing open from the airflow. If it stays closed or barely moves, the vent line is blocked.

5. Excess Lint Around the Dryer

Finding lint behind the dryer, on the floor, or around the lint trap housing means lint is escaping where it should not. This indicates a backup in the vent system.

6. Humidity in the Laundry Room

If the laundry room feels unusually humid or warm during a dryer cycle, moisture is not being properly vented outside. This moisture can also lead to mold problems.

7. It Has Been Over a Year Since the Last Cleaning

Even without obvious symptoms, dryer vents should be cleaned at least once a year. Lint accumulates gradually, and by the time you notice symptoms, the blockage may be severe.

What to Do

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a professional dryer vent cleaning promptly. A technician will use specialized rotary brushes and high-powered vacuums to clear the entire vent line from the dryer connection to the exterior exhaust hood.
