What to Expect During a Professional Air Duct Cleaning

By David Mitchell5 min read

Scheduling your first professional air duct cleaning can feel like a leap of faith if you do not know what to expect. Here is a detailed walkthrough of our process so you know exactly what will happen at every step.

Before the Appointment

When you book, we will ask about your home size, number of vents, and any specific concerns like odors or visible mold. This helps our technician come prepared with the right equipment.

Make sure all vents and registers are accessible. Move furniture or items that block floor or wall vents. You do not need to be present for the entire cleaning, but we ask that someone 18 or older is home at the start and finish.

Step 1: Inspection (15-20 minutes)

The technician starts with a thorough inspection of your HVAC system and accessible ductwork. They use a camera to check inside ducts and document the current condition. This establishes a baseline and identifies any issues like disconnected ducts, damage, or mold.

Step 2: System Setup (10-15 minutes)

The technician connects a high-powered negative air machine to your duct system, typically at the main trunk line near the furnace or air handler. This machine creates a vacuum that will pull all dislodged debris toward it. Supply registers throughout the house are sealed to maximize suction.

Step 3: Agitation and Cleaning (2-3 hours)

This is the main event. Working one vent at a time, the technician inserts rotating brush tools and compressed air nozzles into each duct run. These tools dislodge caked-on dust and debris from the duct walls while the negative air machine captures everything.

The technician cleans all supply ducts, return ducts, registers, grilles, and the air handler cabinet. This systematic approach ensures nothing is missed.

Step 4: Sanitization (15-20 minutes)

After the mechanical cleaning, we apply an EPA-registered antimicrobial treatment throughout the duct system. This kills remaining bacteria, mold spores, and odor-causing organisms, and provides residual protection.

Step 5: Final Inspection and Walkthrough (15 minutes)

The technician performs a post-cleaning camera inspection and shows you before-and-after images. They will review what they found, explain any recommended repairs or maintenance, and answer your questions.

After the Cleaning

You may notice improved airflow immediately. Some households report less dust on surfaces within the first week. Run your HVAC system normally after the cleaning. We recommend replacing your air filter at this time for the best results.
